Joan Carraher, Ed.S. Cedar Rapids Public School Superintendent
One of my least favorite things is to talk about myself, so here are a few highlights of my life! My husband and I are empty
nesters living in Spalding. We have been blessed with 3 children who are now self-supporting adults!
Life-long Learner certainly describes me! My formal Education is as follows: BA Elementary Ed; MA K-12 Principalship;
Ed.S. Superintendent were all completed at UNK. In 2008, I completed the 18 credit hour Assessment Leadership
endorsement at UNL through the NLL Cohort. This wonderful program was an impetus to my return to graduate school
where I am currently pursuing a Doctor of Education degree in Teaching, Curriculum, & Learning with a focus on
Technology Integration into the Curriculum. After passing my comprehensive exams in November of 2011, my
dissertation is ALL (equivalent to a mountain climb) that remains for completion of my program. I am shooting for a
December 2013 Graduation! Regardless, it’s been an exciting and overwhelming process/challenge with much more of
the same coming my way until the final submission of the dissertation.
My stint as an adjunct instructor with Concordia University-Seward in their Master of Literacy Cohort has been put on
hold with all of the other commitments in my life. Teaching at the college level has been a career goal and it has truly
been a rewarding experience both personally and professionally. I hope to be able to continue when life becomes
For 14 years, I was employed with Spalding Public School as kindergarten, first & second grade instructor, Speech
teacher & coach, LAN manager, activities director, principal, and superintendent (not all at the same time ). I joined the
great staff at Cedar Rapids Public School in July of 2010.
In August of 2010, my daughter gave birth to our first grandchild, Lauren Elizabeth. We are very excited to be
grandparents! Kim and her husband live in Albuquerque, NM, so we’re building up our frequent flyer miles. Our son,
David has returned to Spalding and farms and our youngest, Cole is the physical education teacher and activity director
at Loomis Public School.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, walking, baking, web research, playing Words with Friends with my husband :) and
attending school activities.
